Currents estimates put the cannon of traditional Irish dance tunes at least 7,000 compositions. Given this diversity, a common problem faced by musicians and ethnomusicologists is identifying tunes from recordings. This is evident even in the number of commercial recordings whose title is gan ainm (without name). This work attempts to solve this problem by developing a Content Based Music Information Retrieval (CBMIR) System adapted to the characteristics of traditional Irish music. A system is presented called MATT2 (Machine Annotation of Traditional Tunes) whose primary goal is to annotate recordings of traditional Irish dance music with useful meta-data including tune names. MATT2 incorporates a number of novel algorithms for transcription of traditional music and for adapting melodic similarity measures to the creativity and style present in the playing of traditional music. It incorporates a new algorithm for filtering ornamentation notes and accommodating "the long note" in traditional music called Ornamentation Filtering using Adaptive Histograms (OFAH). A new algorithm is presented called TANSEY (Turn ANnotation from SEts using SimilaritY profiles) that annotates sets of tunes played segue as is the custom in traditional Irish dance music. The work presented is validated in experiments using 130 real-world field recordings of traditional music from sessions, classes, concerts and commercial recordings. Test audio includes solo and ensemble playing on a variety of instruments recorded in real-world settings such as noisy public sessions. Results are reported using standard measure from the field of information retrieval (IR) including accuracy, error, precision and recall and the system is compared to alternative approaches for CBMIR common in the literature.

This paper presents MATT2 (Machine Annotation of Traditional Tunes). MATT2 is a novel system which can automatically annotate field recordings of traditional Irish music with useful metadata such as tune name, key signature, time signature, composer and discography. MATT2 works by using a number of algorithms to automatically transcribe digital audio to be annotated to the ABC music notation language. It then compares these transcriptions against a corpus of 860 human made transcriptions in ABC using a variation of the edit distance algorithm. Results using MATT2 to annotate fifty recordings of flute and fiddle tunes demonstrate a high success rate at annotating recordings made by different musicians. Additionally, several of the recordings successfully annotated in testing MATT2 were recorded in imperfect conditions, with badly degraded audio.

A set in traditional Irish music is a sequence of two or more dance tunes in the same time signature, where each tune is repeated an arbitrary number of times. A turn in a set represents the point at which either a tune repeats or a new tune is introduced. Tunes in sets are played in a segue (without a pause) and so detecting the turn is a significant challenge. This paper presents the MATS algorithm, a novel algorithm for identifying turns in sets of traditional Irish music. MATS works on digitised audio files of monophonic flute and tin-whistle music. Previous work on machine annotation of traditional music is summarised and experimental results validating the MATS algorithm are presented.

An increasingly important area in supervised incremental learning is learning in the presence of changing concepts. Research into concept drift is hampered by the lack of availability of controllable `real life' datasets. In this paper we propose an approach for generating real life data over which we have control of the concept and can generate data exhibiting dierent types of concept drift. The approach uses a 3-D driving game to produce a data stream of instances describing how to drive around a track. The classication problem is learning the driving technique of the driver, which can be aected by changes in the driving environment causing changes to the concept. The paper gives illustra- tions of dierent types of concept drift and how standard concept drift handling techniques can adapt to the concept drift.

Supervised machine learning approaches assume the exis- tence of a large collection of manually labelled examples of the problem under consideration. However, in many cases such a collection does not exist and creating one is time consuming and expensive. This can be a barrier to the use of supervised learning in certain situations, particu- larly when the doubt as to whether the system will work or not makes the cost of creating a dataset unjusti¯able. Active learning is a machine learning technique that has been used widely to create classi¯cation sys- tems in the absence of large numbers of labelled examples, but that can also be used to create such collections. This paper will describe a system that uses active learning to label large collections of unlabelled data. We will show that the system can create an accurately labelled dataset ap- proximately 10 times the size of the set of examples manually labelled by an expert. The experiments described are based on recipe data from the 1st Computer Cooking Contest to be held at ECCBR'08 and focus on identifying those recipes in the set that are desserts.

The rise of digital games over recent years has been exponential. While many are used for entertainment, digital games have also begun to permeate education — which has lead to the coining of the term “serious games”. Proponents of serious games argue that they hold enormous potential for learning [2], by embodying a range of pedagogical strategies. While some have adopted commercial games for use in the classroom, others have designed games specifically for educational purposes. However, designing complex and realistic serious games with limited budgets and resources is difficult. In addition, achieving a successful balance between the competing goals of teaching and entertaining is extremely challenging. This paper describes a project undertaken at the Dublin Institute of Technology, which involved designing a serious game to teach food safety principles to undergraduates. The design strategy and process will be outlined, paying particular attention to the theoretical underpinnings of pedagogical design and game design. Results of initial pilots will be outlined. The paper concludes by reflecting on lessons learned during the course of this project and by suggesting implications for the development and implementation of serious games in the wider Higher Education sector. Plans for future research in the area will also be detailed.

In this paper, we compare case-based spam filters, focusing on their resilience to concept drift. In particular, we evaluate how to track concept drift using a case-based spam filter that uses a feature- free distance measure based on text compression. In our experiments, we compare two ways to normalise such a distance measure, finding that the one proposed in [1] performs better. We show that a policy as simple as retaining misclassified examples has a hugely beneficial effect on handling concept drift in spam but, on its own, it results in the case base growing by over 30%. We then compare two different retention policies and two different forgetting policies (one a form of instance selection, the other a form of instance weighting) and find that they perform roughly as well as each other while keeping the case base size constant. Finally, we compare a feature-based textual case-based spam filter with our feature-free ap- proach. In the face of concept drift, the feature-based approach requires the case base to be rebuilt periodically so that we can select a new feature set that better predicts the target concept. We find feature-free approaches to have lower error rates than their feature-based equivalents.

The Snooker Extraction and 3D Builder (SE3DB) is designed to be used as a viewer aid in televised snooker broadcasting. Using a single camera positioned over a snooker table, the system creates a virtual 3D model of the table which can be used to allow audiences view the table from any angle. This would be particularly useful in allowing viewers to determine if particular shots are possible or not. This paper will describe the design, development and evaluation of this system. Particular focus in the paper will be given to the techniques used to recognise and locate the balls on the table.

This paper presents False Positive-Critical Classifiers Comparison a new technique for pairwise comparison of classifiers that allow the control of bias. An evaluation of Naive Bayes, k-Nearest Neighbour and Support Vector Machine classifiers has been carried out on five datasets containing unsolicited and legitimate e-mail messages to confirm the advantage of the technique over Receiver Operating Characteristic curves. The evaluation results suggest that the technique may be useful for choosing the better classifier when the ROC curves do not show comprehensive differences, as well as to prove that the difference between two classifiers is not significant, when ROC suggests that it might be. Spam filtering is a typical application for such a comparison tool, as it requires a classifier to be biased toward negative prediction and to have some upper limit on the rate of false positives. Finally the particular evaluation summary is presented, which confirms that Support Vector Machines outperform other methods in most cases, while the Naive Bayes classifier works well in a narrow, but relevant range of false positive rate.

The problem of concept drift has recently received considerable attention in machine learning research. One important practical problem where concept drift needs to be addressed is spam filtering. The literature on concept drift shows that among the most promising approaches are ensembles and a variety of techniques for ensemble construction has been proposed. In this paper we compare the ensemble approach to an alternative lazy learning approach to concept drift whereby a single case-based classifier for spam filtering keeps itself up-to-date through a case-base maintenance protocol. The case-base maintenance approach offers a more straightforward strategy for handling concept drift than updating ensembles with new classifiers. We present an evaluation that shows that the case-base maintenance approach is as least as effective as/appears marginally more effective than a selection of ensemble techniques. The evaluation is complicated by the overriding importance of False Positives (FPs) in spam filtering. The ensemble approaches can have very good performance on FPs because it is possible to bias an ensemble more strongly away from FPs than it is to bias the single classifer. However this comes at considerable cost to the overall accuracy.

This presentation is concerned with the demonstration of specification and modelling techniques for the representation of geographic data. We will demonstrate two approaches to spatial modelling using freely available tools. We will use an extension to the Unified Modelling Language (UML) called ArgoCASEGEO[1] together with an OCL tool called USE[2]. Together these represent the object oriented paradigm. In contrast we also use an executable specification language called CafeOBJ[3]. Both of these techniques allow us to build executable prototypes. Heterogeneous geographic information consists of metric, topological, and thematic data.

We consider the issues in the design of accessible interfaces for games and propose a set of interface configurations for playing Pong, using this as a proof of concept for more elaborate games.

An initial evaluation of the game, from both a technical and pedagogical point of view, will be presented as will conclusions on the viability of using a commercial game engine for the purpose of developing educational games.

Message classification is a text classification task that has provoked much interest in machine learning. One aspect of message classification that presents a particular challenge is the classification of short text messages. This paper presents an assessment of applying a casebased reasoning approach that was developed for long text messages (specifically spam filtering) to short text messages. The evaluation involves determining the most appropriate feature types and feature representation for short text messages and then comparing the performance of the case-based classifier with both a Na¨ıve Bayes classifier and a Support Vector Machine. Our evaluation shows that short text messages require different features and even different classifiers than long text messages. A machine learner which is to classify text messages will require some level of configuration in these aspects.
