The origin of copyright The concept of copyright probably originates from Ireland c561 AD. According to legend, St. Colmcille made a copy of St. Finnian's gospel book (itself a copy of St. Jerome's Latin gospel book). St. Finnian insisted that the copy was his and had the High King of Ireland resolve their dispute. The High King decided in St. Finnian's favour and ruled that Colmcille's copy belonged to the owner of the original text. Legend has it that the wording of his judgment was "To every cow her calf, to every book its copy" (Mould, 1964 - The Irish Saints, p95). Refresh this page for latest update.
