Before starting this programme in 2003, I had worked in a variety of IT roles for fifteen years. My DIT Programming Certificate and NCC Systems & Analysis and Design Certificate were distant memories and potential employers were asking for candidates with degrees. I applied for this programme, looking to update my skills and make myself more marketable as a software developer.
The modules are practical and useful and I found that they complemented my work as a software developer, so that I could bring experience from work into my college assignments and vice versa. I recommend this course to anyone who's looking for an IT degree that is well-paced, up-to-date and useful.
I also advise taking the programme over five years, spreading Stage 4 subjects and the final year project over two years. At the start, five years seemed a lifetime to me but it quickly passed and I'll graduate this October.

Being a full time Systems
Administrator with a very technical background and having completed
a National Certificate in IT only a few years prior to signing
myself up to the BSc, I was happily surprised at the course content
from the moment I started.
Working day-to-day on technical
systems, I knew "how" to get from Point A to Point B without always
knowing "why". The earlier Stages of the course gave me a very
insightful view into the background and reasons of "why" things were
done and this progressed into the latter stages where you apply this
knowledge to the very practical assignments. Databases (which I was
dreading!) immediately comes to mind here!
I continually received advice from
the very approachable lecturers about modules, assignments and a
huge amount of support from my very flexible and accommodating final
year Project Supervisor. After a discussion with Ciarán I opted to
attempt Stage 4 in one year. While this is possible, it does put a
bit of pressure on you!
If I was to do it all again I
might look into the option of submitting the major project in
September rather than just before the Exams in May. Being able to
choose a topic yourself for the project made it very enjoyable and
generally less of a daunting task to write. I would recommend
choosing something that you work with regularly or something that
really interests you, it will stand to you when you can talk
enthusiastically about your topic at the presentation stage!
This course is interesting,
useful, challenging and relevant to anyone with an interest in, or
working within, an IT environment.

After taking many short courses in Ireland and England I decided to take the BSc in Information Technology and Information Systems to formalise my existing knowledge, gain extra knowledge and enhance my career prospects.
The programme has delivered on my expectations. When I started the programme I was a Junior Web Developer - by the end of the programme I was a Senior Project Manager in a multi-national company. Essentially - as I grew my knowledge from
my studies, my career grew at the same time.
The programme is well laid out, challenging, stimulating and very enjoyable. It is structured extremely well for part-time students. I feel that anyone working in the IT sector who wishes to progress up the corporate ladder will find that this programme meets their needs.
- Maurice Lynch (Class of 2008)
The best thing about the course, for
me, was it's modularised nature which allowed me to take on as much
or as little given the situation each year.
I found the staff to be very
approachable and helpful and was a blessing for me as I missed a
large part of a semester through illness and they set aside time to
help get me back up to speed. I even found myself presenting a paper
at an international conference thanks to the encouragement and
enthusiasm of my supervisor.
For anybody looking for a solid
understanding of IT then this course is ideal. It's subject coverage
provides the perfect balance that now I feel confident enough to
approach any area in IT with the skills required to succeed.
- Kerry O'Connor (Class of 2008)
As a professional software
developer, I was interested in completing a programme which would
serve to widen my knowledge and skills in the broad area of
Information Technology. Although I had some prior IT experience, it
was the Degree in Information Systems & Information Technology at DIT
Kevin Street which gave me the solid foundation to meet my career
objectives. I found the programme to be both challenging and rewarding
as it gave me the opportunity to acquire a valuable accreditation
whilst enhancing my computer expertise. The modules on the programme
are extremely interesting and beneficial, knowledge of which will
prove useful in the IT marketplace. I also found the programme to be
very flexible, which for me meant that the academic duties of being a
part-time student and my day-to-day professional duties never
conflicted. At DIT Kevin St, I found the lecturers and the
administrative staff to be very co-operative and friendly.
- Gail Melia (Class of 2006)
The BSc in IT and Information
Systems gave me the opportunity to formalise my years of experience in
IT, and at the same time, broadened my knowledge of technical systems.
I found Project Management
and Management Information Systems, particularly interesting
and felt that they had been very well taught, with a strong emphasis
on real-world experience.
Having completed the programme, I
now have a much better appreciation for how technology can contribute
to business success. I am currently studying for an MBA at the Smurfit
Business School, thanks to the excellent foundation acquired during my
undergraduate studies at DIT.
- Conor Gormley (Class of 2006)
I decided to take the BSc in
Information Systems and Information Technology at night to further a
number of aspects of my career. One area that interested me within my
career development was that the programme has a wide range of subject
matter. The main areas that I was interested in were the project
management elements. To add further scope to my skill set the
programme offered a technical perspective that would be a great
addition to me. The programme also allows the student to progress
through the degree at their own pace.
I believe the programme has provided
me with the necessary skills to further my career within the IT sector
in Ireland, particularly since the industrially relevant knowledge
within the DIT is up to date and core to all stages of the programme.
Since I graduated with my BSc in
Information Systems and Information Technology there have been many
opportunities to develop my career within a short time frame. The
degree is well recognised and for any student to attend college for
four years this will be seen as a great attribute by any potential
employer.
