Learning and Teaching MethodsThis module is taken off-site as an industrial placement. During that time, the student will be using and enhancing their skills with input from the relevant industrial contacts at the placement company. Students may be working as part of a team or individually at the placement company, depending upon the individual requirements of the company. Students will be assigned an internship monitor from DIT who will visit the student during the placement to ascertain how the placement is progressing. More details of the arrangements for this module are in appendix C to part A of the programme document. Module ContentOne of the aims of the placement is to enhance the skills already obtained by the student in their studies to date at DIT. Within the placement, the student may be assigned to one or more types of tasks/projects that are relevant to the programme, such as: software development, testing, support, helpdesk and quality assurance. The suitability of the internship will be assessed by the DIT Internship coordinator before the student is placed. Module AssessmentThe assessment of the Internship period consists of two components: Internship Assessment Component and the Internship Report and Presentation Component.
Internship Assessment Component The Internship Assessment component is an annual assessment of the student’s performance while on placement. This component is assessed jointly by three members of School of Computing staff;
The monthly logs prepared by the student while on internship (and authenticated by the Industrial Supervisor) and the assessment report prepared by the Industrial Supervisor are used in the assessment of this component.
The Internship Assessment component is assessed annually as a Pass or Fail.
Internship Report and Presentation Component For each year that the student spends on the Internship Programme, they will be required to produce an Internship Report and to make a formal Internship Presentation of their experiences to a selection of staff of the School of Computing. Guidelines for the format of the stage 3 and the stage 4 Internship Reports and for the format of the stage 3 and the stage 4 Internship Presentations are included in Appendix C of part A of the programme document. The Internship Report and Presentation Component will be assessed by the student’s Internship Monitor, the Internship Coordinator and one other member of School of Computing Staff.
The student is given a percentage mark for this component.
To pass the internship module for each stage the student must achieve a Pass in the Internship Assessment Component and at least 40% in the Internship Report and Presentation Component. If the student passes the Internship Assessment Component, the overall mark reported for the internship module is equal to the mark achieved for the Internship Report component. If the student does not pass the Internship Assessment Component, the overall mark for the internship module will be a fail.
The detailed assessment criteria are indicated in the Internship Assessment Form, a copy of which is in Appendix C to part A of the programme document.
