Enterprise Systems
Author:Denis Manley Description:This module develops on knowledge gained by the student in Information Systems stage 3 to gain a more in depth knowledge of how to developing decision support systems that integrate storage systems with methods of extracting and presenting information that is required to develop organisational strategy; to analyse different models to developing various competitive strategies which optimise organisations resources and its position and scope in the market ; and evaluate the different types of enterprise application architecture and systems. Aim:The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge of organisational strategic management process and how computerised enterprise architectures and enterprise applications are used to facilitate strategies in an organisation. Learning Outcomes:On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
Learning and Teaching MethodsLectures: using case studies, to discuss the strategic management process; discussion, using, different ideal scenarios, on designing decision support applications and resource planning systems. Tutorial sessions using examples to support the discussions covered in the lectures. Module ContentStrategic Management: A discussion on how organisations should formulate, implement and evaluate their strategies. Advance Data Warehouses: An evaluation of how data warehouses can be used as an integral source in the strategic decision making. Strategic Data Mining: An appraisal of data mining techniques used in formulating organisational strategic decision making. Advanced On-line Analytical processing (OLAP): Evaluation of the architecture of modern (OLAP) systems and how the can be integrated with data warehouses and data mining systems to produce enterprise related information. Decision support systems: discussion on systems which aid organisations to develop and choose strategic decisions Enterprise Resource Planning: Discuss on the concepts of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems for integrating the primary applications in an organization. Module AssessmentAssessment will be based on a three hour end of year written exam and continuous assessment during the semester.
Continuous assessment will take a form of one assessment which may include: an assignment where students will be asked to write and present a formal report discussing elements related to the utilisation of information systems in the strategic management formulation.
The suggested method of assessing the individual learning outcomes for the module is as follows: Learning outcomes 1 – 5 will be assessed by written examination. Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be assessed by continuous assessment. Students are required to get a minimum of 40% in the combined results of the examination and the assessment.
