Caliban

"...his brute..."

  • Featured in :
    • The Tempest by Willam Shakespeare
    • Caliban Upon Setebos by Robert Browning

Biography

Caliban was born of a witch; Sycorax, worked within Nature and as a part of it. She worked with devils and the lowest orders of spirits. Although we are not given details of Caliban's birth, it seems likely that a creature as subhuman in appearance as Caliban was not born of a human union, prehaps from a union between Sycorax and an incubus. Caliban's original love for Prospero and Miranda, and subsequent hatred for them, illustrate his fundamental reliance on his senses. Caliban's dearest wish is to depose Prospero by killing him and, rather than resuming rule of the island himself, submit to the rule of Stephano.

Ariel

"...his spirit of the air..."

  • Featured in :
  • The Tempest by Willam Shakespeare

Biography

An airy spirit, Ariel serves his master Prospero well in his many tasks of magic on Prospero's island. He can do many things, including create a great storm, turn invisible and plays music that makes others sleep. Once enslaved and imprisoned by Sycorax for refusing to obey her, she encased him in a cloven pine. Sycorax died and Ariel remained imprisoned until Prospero freed him. Ariel wants his freedom from all masters, and eventually Prospero grants this wish.
