My research interests activites are divided into the following areas:
- World-Wide-Mind: This is a distributed artificial intelligence project which seeks to address the challenge of AI through integration of diverse algorithms over large computer networks. Specifically within this domain, I am interested in the action selection problem - the problem that is solved by natural intelligence any time a decision is made about what to do next. Goal conflict, and the relationships between goals and fitness, and evolutionary fitness, fit neatly into this area.
- Universal Design: This related to the design of products, services, software and indeed anything else, such that it is accessible to the widest possible audience. Practitioners of Universal Design recognise that an improved design for the lmiits of human ability improves the usability across the full spectrum of human ability. Particularly within this area, I am interested in the design of web resources with accessibility in mind - whereby the web becomes usable to the greatest degree possible for all interested potential users.
- Education: My main interest in educational research lies in the area of service-learning. This is an approach to active learning where students are given meaningful projects in the community, through which they demonstrate their ability to satisfy the learning outcomes of their respective programmes of study. I am also interested in the internationalisation of education, primarily due to my involvement in the School of Computing's franchised programmes and my involvement in the now completed Emersion project. Other interests in this domain include e-Learing and curriculum design.
- Other: Recreationally, I am interested in the evolutionary relationships between various families of sports, an obvious example (with a correctly disputed line of ancestry) being Gaelic Football's relationship with Australian Football, but less obvious examples include Association Football and the Chinese sport of Cuju - which FIFA identify as the first instance of what we currently call soccer.
My publications in these areas are available on my publications page.
