“Data Mining is the name coined in the business world for the application of machine learning algorithms to large amounts of data (Weiss and Indurkhya 1998)” (Alpaydin 2004).

Alpaydin E. (2004) An introduction to Machine Learning MIT Press

Weiss S.M. and N. Indurkhya (1998) Predictive Data Mining: A Practical Guide. Morgan Kaufmann

An understanding of the area of machine learning and experience of implementing and using machine learning systems is a significant component in knowledge management. This module covers the rationale, techniques and applications of Machine Learning environment will be explored.

The aim of this module is to provide students with a comprehensive foundation and practical skills in machine learning including the underlying principles, the techniques used and the applications of machine learning in knowledge management. Students will be required to use the techniques presented and to design and develop a machine learning system.
