Knowledge representation and reasoning is the study of how knowledge about the world can be represented and what kinds of reasoning can be done with that knowledge. Many of the broad topics within knowledge management (such as knowledge engineering, data acquisition, data mining, human-computer interaction, and others) rely on representations of knowledge and reasoning techniques to be applied. The quality and design of representation and reasoning approaches can determine if a particular endeavour will succeed and to what degree.

This module will give students a solid background in the subject. It will also allow them to implement and explore some of the fundamental techniques in the area.

Beyond the introductory and motivating material the module divides into the following three sections:

  1. Knowledge Representation

  2. Search Algorithms

  3. Problem Solving Techniques

The module is strongly practically oriented – requiring the student to develop working systems. There is also, however, a strong theoretical component to the module.
